Woman Dies, Child Seriously Hurt in Crash on I-80 Near Sutherland, NE
Sutherland, NE (August 15, 2026) – A woman died, and a child was seriously injured in a semi-truck collision on Interstate 80 near Sutherland on Friday, August 14. The wreck happened at about 5:20 a.m. near mile marker 159, approximately 18 miles west of North Platte.
Investigators said an eastbound semi-truck crossed onto the shoulder and struck a Nissan Frontier pickup parked along the interstate. Three people were inside the pickup when the semi-truck hit it.
Emergency crews transported all three pickup occupants to Great Plains Health in North Platte. The woman later died at the hospital, while the child was airlifted to Omaha with serious injuries.
The pickup driver received treatment and was released from the hospital. The semi-truck driver was also taken to Great Plains Health with non-life-threatening injuries, while a passenger in the semi was not hurt.
Troopers arrested the semi-truck driver on suspicion of motor vehicle homicide. He remains in the Lincoln County Jail.
Crews closed Interstate 80 in both directions during the investigation because vehicles came to rest in the westbound lanes. The highway has since reopened.
The
Nebraska State Patrol continues to investigate the collision and is conducting a full crash reconstruction, including a commercial vehicle post-crash investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the woman’s family and hope the injured child makes a full and steady recovery.
How Long Do Families Have to File a Wrongful Death Claim in Sutherland, NE?
In Sutherland and throughout Nebraska, families generally have two years from the date of death to pursue a wrongful death claim. The deceased person’s personal representative files the claim for the benefit of the surviving spouse or next of kin.
After a fatal crash, families may need to have a personal representative appointed before pursuing the case. Addressing this step early can help prevent unnecessary delays while the two-year filing period continues to run.
When a commercial truck is involved, determining who may be legally responsible can require a closer review. Depending on the facts, liability may involve the truck driver, trucking company, vehicle owner, or another business connected to the truck.
If criminal charges are filed after a deadly collision, the criminal prosecution and wrongful death action remain separate proceedings. Families can explore their civil rights without assuming that the criminal case will resolve their claim.
As the case develops, important documentation should be preserved in one place. Medical bills, funeral expenses, crash reports, photographs, employment information, and available trucking records may help an attorney evaluate the claim and the losses involved.
Under Nebraska law, wrongful death damages are based on losses experienced by the surviving spouse or next of kin. The personal representative pursues those damages on their behalf rather than family members filing separate wrongful death actions.
Before the filing period expires, a
wrongful death lawyer can review the deadline, determine who should bring the claim, and identify potentially responsible parties. An attorney may also address trucking-company and insurance issues throughout the legal process.
