SUV Strikes Patrol Vehicle on I-80 in Lincoln Co., NE
Lincoln County, NE (August 15, 2026) – A Nebraska State Patrol trooper was injured in a collision on Interstate 80 near mile marker 187 in Lincoln County on Thursday, August 13. The wreck occurred at approximately 10:10 p.m.
Initial reports indicate that the trooper was sitting inside a parked patrol vehicle while helping direct traffic around an earlier crash. Three troopers were guiding drivers into the passing lane as tow truck operators cleared the roadway.
A Buick Enclave rear-ended the patrol vehicle while its emergency lights were activated. The Buick then came to rest in the median.
Other troopers immediately checked both drivers for injuries. Emergency crews transported the trooper to Great Plains Health, where medical staff treated the trooper for minor injuries before releasing them.
The Buick driver was not injured. The driver received citations for failing to move over for an emergency vehicle, having an open alcohol container, driving an unregistered vehicle, and driving without insurance.
The
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash.
We hope the injured trooper makes a full recovery.
How Does Nebraska’s Move-Over Law Apply After a Crash in Lincoln County, NE?
After a crash in Lincoln County, Nebraska’s move-over law may help establish whether an approaching driver acted carelessly. Investigators may determine whether the driver changed lanes, reduced speed, and followed traffic directions before striking a stopped patrol vehicle.
When a highway has two or more lanes traveling in the same direction, approaching drivers generally must leave one moving lane between their vehicle and the stopped vehicle. They must also follow directions from peace officers or roadside personnel.
If traffic, weather, or roadway conditions make changing lanes unsafe, the approaching driver must reduce their speed. The law requires the driver to maintain a safe speed and use proper care while passing the stopped vehicle.
Even when the driver receives a citation, an insurer may challenge whether the violation caused your injuries. A successful claim may provide compensation for your medical expenses, lost income, reduced earning ability, pain, and other crash-related losses.
With these potential disputes in mind, a
car accident lawyer can investigate the collision, identify available insurance coverage, and communicate with insurers. An attorney can also explain how Nebraska’s modified comparative negligence rule may affect the injured person’s recovery.
