What Should I Do Immediately After a Car Accident in Nebraska?
After a car accident in Nebraska, your priority is to check yourself and others for injuries and call 911 immediately if anyone is hurt. Nebraska law requires drivers involved in a crash that causes injury or property damage to stop at the scene, render reasonable assistance, and exchange information with the other party.
Once emergency units arrive and the scene is safe, exchange names, contact details, driver's license numbers, license plate numbers, and insurance information with the other driver. If witnesses saw the crash happen, collect their names and phone numbers before they leave.
Seek medical attention as soon as possible, even if you feel okay at the scene. Many serious injuries, including concussions, spinal damage, and internal trauma, do not produce obvious symptoms right away. A medical evaluation creates a documented record that connects your injuries directly to the crash.
This state follows a modified comparative fault rule, meaning that if you are found partially responsible for the crash, your compensation is reduced by your assigned percentage of fault. You can still recover compensation as long as you are not more than 50 percent at fault. Thorough documentation of the scene and prompt medical care help protect your legal position and make it harder for an insurer to shift blame onto you unfairly.
Nebraska also has a four-year statute of limitations for personal injury claims, but acting early remains important. Evidence fades, witnesses become harder to reach, and medical records lose their direct connection to the crash over time. Starting the process promptly gives a car accident attorney the best opportunity to build a strong and well-supported case on your behalf.
