Horse Trailer Crash Injures Two on US-183 Near Holdrege, NE
Holdrege, NE (June 5, 2026) – Two people were injured in a three-vehicle collision Thursday morning, June 4, on US-183 south of Holdrege.
According to the Phelps County Sheriff's Office, emergency units were dispatched around 6 a.m. to the crash near 729 Road, approximately four miles south of the city. Investigators said a southbound driver from Alliance reportedly fell asleep, crossed the centerline, and struck a northbound vehicle that was pulling a horse trailer.
The northbound driver, a resident of Spearfish, South Dakota, was forced off the roadway and into a ditch. Debris from the collision also hit a third vehicle traveling in the area.
The driver and a passenger in the southbound vehicle were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No additional information regarding the occupants of the other vehicles was released.
Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
We are thinking of those injured and wish them a full recovery.
Can Driver Fatigue Lead to Liability After a Crash in Phelps County, NE?
Driver fatigue is a factor that can contribute to serious traffic collisions, particularly on rural highways where motorists may travel long distances without stopping. When a tired driver loses focus, reaction times can slow, judgment may become impaired, and the risk of crossing lanes or missing hazards can increase significantly. Whether fatigue creates legal liability depends on the specific facts uncovered during an investigation.
Highways in and around Phelps County, including US-183 or US-6, connect agricultural communities, commercial traffic, and long-distance travelers. Many motorists spend extended periods behind the wheel on these roads, making driver alertness an important safety concern. In some cases, evidence such as witness accounts, vehicle data, and crash reports may help establish whether fatigue played a role.
People injured in collisions involving alleged driver fatigue often face unexpected medical expenses, lost income, and ongoing treatment needs. Even injuries initially described as non-life-threatening can require follow-up care and rehabilitation. Maintaining records of medical treatment and expenses can help document the effects of a crash over time.
