DUI Suspect Booked After Fatal Crash on 114th St in Omaha, NE
Omaha, NE (July 10, 2026) – A 10-year-old boy died from his injuries after a two-vehicle wreck on Thursday evening, July 9, in southwest Omaha.
The Omaha Police were sent to 114th Street and West Center Road around 6:35 p.m. A red Subaru Impreza station wagon was turning onto 114th Street when a black Chevrolet Malibu struck it, splitting the Subaru in two.
The 10-year-old and a 5-year-old boy, both riding in the back seat of the Subaru, were taken to the hospital with CPR already underway. Both drivers were taken to a separate hospital with life-threatening injuries. The boy died from his injuries on Friday, police confirmed.
The 28-year-old driver of the Chevrolet, identified as Tanner Hunt of Elkhorn, was booked on two counts of driving under the influence causing serious injury, along with refusing a DUI test, driving while revoked, and having no proof of insurance. Hunt had been free on bond from a separate DUI arrest in Bellevue on April 3.
Police continue to piece together what led to the wreck.
Our condolences go out to the boy's family during this unimaginable loss.
How Does a DUI Charge Affect a Crash Claim in Omaha, NE?
A DUI charge can significantly strengthen a civil claim, since a criminal conviction or even the underlying arrest record often serves as strong evidence of negligence in a related personal injury or wrongful death case.
Nebraska allows injured parties to pursue compensation from a drunk driver separately from any criminal case, and a prior DUI arrest can also become relevant when seeking punitive damages.
Families of children hurt or killed in a crash usually face long hospital stays, emotional trauma, and, in the most serious cases, funeral and burial expenses. Surviving family members may also need extended support to cope with the loss of a child, and Nebraska law recognizes both wrongful death and survival actions to address the different types of harm a family experiences.
Nebraska follows a modified comparative negligence standard, which means a driver who caused a crash while impaired would typically bear most or all of the fault, which can simplify liability questions compared to other collisions. Because criminal proceedings and civil claims move on separate tracks, an Omaha wrongful death lawyer can monitor both simultaneously, using developments in the criminal case to support the civil side while working to hold the driver and any applicable insurance coverage accountable.
