Plattsmouth, NE (May 29, 2026) – An outbuilding caught fire on Thursday afternoon, May 28, near the intersection of Highway 66 and 42nd Street in Plattsmouth. Plattsmouth Fire was dispatched around 1:34 p.m. and found heavy smoke visible from miles away. One person was hurt and hospitalized.
The fire was contained to a shed-style outbuilding on the property, which held hay bales and chickens. Multiple mutual aid crews responded from surrounding communities after the initial call, and a tanker was among the first resources requested given the rural setting.
One person was taken to the University of Medical Center for treatment of what were described as light first-degree burns.
No names were released following the accident. The investigation into the cause of the fire remains open.
We wish the person hurt a quick and full recovery.
Can You Sue for Injuries Caused by a Fire in Plattsmouth, NE?
Yes. In many cases, a person hurt in a fire on someone else's property may have grounds to pursue a personal injury claim. Nebraska property owners have a legal duty to maintain reasonably safe conditions for people who are lawfully present.
If a fire results from negligence, the property owner may be held liable for injuries that follow. Property owners can’t fail to address a known hazard, they have to avoid improperly stored flammable materials or faulty wiring, for example. Whether a claim is viable depends on the specific circumstances, including what caused the fire and the relationship between the injured person and the property owner.
Even burns described as minor at the scene can require ongoing medical attention. First-degree burns may heal without complication, but deeper tissue damage is not always immediately apparent, and smoke inhalation can cause respiratory issues that develop over time. A person hurt in a property fire could be able to seek compensation for medical costs, lost income, and pain tied to the injury.
A personal injury attorney can help investigate the fire's origin, review whether a property owner's negligence contributed to the harm, and explain what options may be available under Nebraska law. Claims that property fires can be fact-intensive, and early legal involvement helps preserve evidence before it is lost.
