Driver Critically Hurt in Head-On Crash on S 56th St in Omaha, NE
Omaha, NE (May 22, 2026) – A male driver was critically hurt and a female passenger seriously injured after a two-vehicle head-on crash at South 56th Street and Sherman Street in Omaha. Omaha Fire rushed to the scene at approximately 9:30 p.m on Thursday, May 21.
The male driver was found with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 6, which indicates a severe level of unconsciousness, along with an obvious fracture to his right femur and heavy damage to the front of his vehicle. He was taken to Bryan West Medical Center as a critical trauma patient.
The female passenger is a woman believed to be in her thirties. She was alert and responsive but reported right-sided pain, an open fracture to her right wrist, and right hip pain with signs consistent with a possible fracture. She was taken to a hospital as a serious but non-critical trauma patient.
Emergency units responded, and both people required extraction from the vehicle before transport. No names were confirmed in the initial report on the wreck.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
We are thinking of both people hurt and hope they receive every bit of care they need on the road to recovery.
What Should Seriously Hurt Crash Victims Know in Omaha, NE?
When a crash produces injuries that are considered serious, the medical and legal path forward can be overwhelming for the people involved and their families. In Nebraska, a person seriously hurt in a vehicle crash may be eligible to seek compensation for emergency medical care, ongoing treatment, lost income, and other damages. When one driver appears to have caused a head-on collision, the people hurt in the other vehicle may have a claim against that driver and their insurance carrier.
Head-on collisions in Omaha streets can happen when a driver crosses the center line, runs a red light, or enters a one-way street in the wrong direction. The severity of injuries in these crashes tends to be significantly higher than in rear-end or sideswipe collisions because the full force of both vehicles is absorbed on impact.
Fractures, traumatic brain injuries, spinal damage, and internal trauma are all common outcomes in head-on crashes. A person with a femur fracture typically faces surgery, extended hospitalization, and months of physical rehabilitation.
The financial cost of the level of care for serious injuries can accumulate quickly, particularly when a person is unable to work during recovery. In these cases, an Omaha car accident attorney can help identify all available insurance coverage, assess liability, and clarify what types of compensation may be available based on the specific facts of the crash.
